Diversify Your Reading

On the heels of reading EllRay Jakes is Not a Chicken by Sally Warner (a good realistic early chapter book that is most notable for how few similar books featuring African American boys are out there), I was attracted to the announcement that Diversity in YA Fiction is hosting a Diversify Your Summer Reading Challenge. Reading books that reflects the diversity in society can never be a bad thing to do and despite the blog name the challenge includes Middle Grade fiction (which I read a lot more of than YA) so I’m hopping on board. When I perused the new book lists at the Diversity in YA (and Middle Grade) site, I was pleased to see that quite a few of the titles were already on my TBR list: The Boy at the End of the World, The Friendship Doll, Beauty Queens, Divergent and Warp Speed to name a few. Most of my book reviews go up on my library’s Staff Picks blog, but I’ll be sure to post the wrap-up essay and occasional summaries here.
