Ah, draft posts. When I finished at the library, I still had 29 draft posts for this blog, some dating back almost 2 years when I began it! I’ve sorted through and scheduled for thematically-appropriate dates. Here’s the first, a storytime in preparation for Father’s Day.

Opener: Glad to Meet You by Peter and Ellen Allard

Oh, Daddy by Bob Shea. Love Bob Shea, such super silliness in this one.

Song: My Special Friend (Bingo tune)
I have a very special friend
And Daddy is his name-o
D-A-D-D-Y, D-A-D-D-Y, D-A-D-D-Y,
And Daddy is his name-o

My Dad! by Charles Fuge

Song: Daddy Takes Good Care of Me (from Storytime ABCs, sung to “Mary Had a Little Lamb”)
Daddy takes good care of me,
Care of me,
Care of me.
Daddy takes good care of me
Because he loves me so.

Additional verses:
Daddy likes to play with me
Daddy feeds me yummy food
Daddy gives me lots of hugs
Daddy gives me lots of kisses
Daddy tucks me into bed
Daddy likes to read to me

I Love My Pirate Papa by Laura Leuck. Pirate stories are always a hit!

Song: Gallant Ship
Three times around went the gallant ship
Three times around went she (spin in circle)
Three times around went the gallant ship
Till she sank to the bottom of the sea (sink down)

“Pull her up,” said the sailor crew
“Pull her up,” said we (pulling motion)
“Pull her up,” said the sailor crew
“Or she’ll sink to the bottom of the sea.” (sink down)

Because I am Your Daddy by Sherry North

The Fathers are Coming Home by Margaret Wise Brown with fantastic retro illustrations by Stephen Savage

My craters are not attached to my moon surface so they can be added and named in a participatory manner.

Another week of fabulous Flannel Friday contributions! I never cease to be amazed with the creativity each week. Thanks so much to everybody who shared this week.

Books to Flannelboards

Linda of Notes from the Story Room continues her inspiring series, “Telling a Story Five Ways,” using props to tell the story of The Fisherman and His Wife

With multiple copies of each key, Lisa at Thrive After Three has made an interactive Goodnight Gorilla.

Mollie at What Happened in Storytime has a bright, colourful version of Have You Seen My Blue Sock? by Eve Bunting

Storytime Katie brings us a beautiful version of the perfect-for-flannelboard Mouse Paint

Andrea at Librarian vs Storytime has Arnold Lobe’s Mouse Tales ready for her wind storytime next week

Piper Loves the Library tells Pete the Cat with the aid of story stones, a new-to-me, but fabulous storytelling device! (More from Jane below too!)

Up in the Air

Kathryn of Fun with Friends at Storytime adapted Pretty Balloons for a hot air balloons storytime. Pretty sure the glitter balloon was a HUGE hit!

Miss Meg’s Storytime has a set of planets for One Little, Two Little, Three Little Planets to go with her space storytime plan. Her spaceship craft could also be flannelized.

Poetry

It’s fitting that there are some straight-up rhymes since it’s National Poetry Month.

I Planted a Whistle by Jack Prelutsky at What Bridget is Reading

Delicious Alligator Pie is featured by Anna at Future Librarian Superhero

Lisa at Libraryland shares two Five Senses flannel rhymes from her Music and Movement storytime: “Two Little Eyes to Look Around” and “If a Bird You Want to Hear” which she turned into a game.

Animals

Mrs. Andre’s Library must know I’ve got a hedgehog obsession since she brought out Five Little Hedgehogs.

For Arbor Day, Sandy from Storytime Sparks uses Beanie Babies for a fun game of Who is Hiding in the Tree?

Spreading the Flannel Love

Jane from Piper Loves the Library, Kari Ann and Heather are presenting The Flannel Panel at the Connecticut Library Association Conference. Jane’s prepared a great write-up of what they will present as well her gussied-up flannels, all ready for showtime.

And a third contribution from Jane as she preps for the conference (we’re almost as lucky as the attendees!), Popsicle Kid (with spare tongues for the kiddos)!

Flannel Friday Hosts Needed

If you’re interested in hosting Flannel Friday, we’re currently scheduling hosts for June and July. If you’ve never hosted before, or you haven’t hosted yet this year and would like to, email flannelboardfriday [at] gmail.com with some dates that would work for you. All the details about hosting can be found at the Flannel Friday blog Get Involved page.

Saturday was the first in a new library class series, OAKTech, Older Adults and Kids and Technology. Fifth and sixth graders from the Lego League teams at Lemme and Mann are teaching monthly classes to older adults about Skype, Google Maps and iPads.

Mann Bots and Lemme Lego League students teach older adults how to Skype at the Iowa City Public Library

The kids are an infectiously enthusiastic bunch who love sharing their knowledge. Most of the older adults who registered for today’s class did not show up, but those who did were appreciative and attentive. As one participant noted, she appreciated “being here with great enthusiasm and skills; enthusiasm and standing right beside me!”

The students prepare a Powerpoint for each class which they first run through quickly while their students listen. The steps are then repeated the steps slowly as the older adults follow along. At this point the children (except for the one guiding the Powerpoint) gather around the older adults to assist as needed. The older adults then repeat the steps on their own knowing that they can still ask the children for help as well as refer to the handouts the children have prepared for them.

The spontaneous tech conversations between the participants and students afterwards were especially exciting to watch (a very indepth ipod preview took place). There will be a summer break and then the classes will resume in the fall.

The impetus for these classes began in December when the Mann Bots (Mann’s Lego League team) approached me to see if they could teach a class on downloading pictures from a camera at the library to fulfill the Lego League’s Seniors Solutions requirement. Of course I said yes! It was a great experience.

The students, seniors and I were all interested in more classes. In January, we learned that Lemme Elementary also chose teaching technology as their Senior Solution and the University of Iowa’s LEAP (Lifetime Enrichment Adult Program) got interested. This provided a bigger pool of student teachers as well as the opportunity to advertise the programs to a large audience, many of whom may not regularly use the library. Win-win. In addition, Lemme and Mann feed into the same junior high school so it is nice way to introduce the students to each other. This partnership is a win on many levels!

A huge thank-you to the parent mentors Katie and Julie and teacher Lisa for their time, not only with OAKTech, but the entire Lego League season!

A firetruck is always a good addition to any set of flannels (or house with preschoolers). This firetruck and its partner pieces will work with many rhymes and flannel games, I made making sure I had all the components for “Hurry Hurry.” The ladder is not glued down so that I can raise it when it is time to “climb the ladder.”

My firetruck template is available on Slideshare. I used a cookie cutter to make the bell.Hurry, Hurry (tune: 10 little Indians)
Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck (x3) ERRRRRRR!
Hurry, hurry, ring the bell (x3) Ding, ding ding ding ding
Hurry hurry climb the ladder (x3) climb, climb, climb, climb, climb (with motions)
Hurry, hurry squirt the water (x3), splash, splash, splash, splash, splash
Hurry, hurry back to the station (x3) early in the morning

It will also be fun to use as an option for the ever popular Where Does It Go? flannel game.

This past December the Library held its first craft bazaar. It was a success for both fundraising and, as our director says, friendraising. Our library is lucky enough to have a graphic designer on staff and she made a lovely totebag for the sale. I decided it was so lovely that a lot of Flannel Friday folks might like it and picked up an extra to give away to a lucky blog reader. This, a snowy day here, perfect for crafting by the fireside, seems a good day to begin the giveaway.

Just fill out the form below by February 15 for a chance to win! International entrants welcome.

UPDATE: And the winner is The Book Harlot! Congratulations!

Oberlin, Ohio had a long tradition of defying the Fugitive Slave Act. With the particulars of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858, Judith and Dennis Fradin bring an incredible story of conviction to children’s attention with The Price of Freedom: How One Town Stood Up to Slavery. .

Oberlin was so welcoming to escaping slaves that many chose to remain in Oberlin rather than moving on to Canada. In September 1858 when slavehunters came to Oberlin for two escaped slaves, they succeeded in capturing one of them, John. While John and his kidnapper were waiting for the train south in nearby Wellington, hundreds of Oberlinians set out after the slavehunter — students, store owners, men, women, former slaves risking their own recapture, even a 74-year-old Underground Railroad conductor. The Fradins build the tension of the afternoon with timestamped action beginning at 2:30 when John was brought to Wellington until 6:15 when the Oberlinians enter Wadsworth’s Hotel and successfully took John back.

Unfortunately, fearing future slavehunters, John left Oberlin after several days and nothing is known about his life after that. President Buchanan sided with the kidnappers and upheld the Fugitive Slave Act. The resulting was a 3 month jail sentence for 39 of the Oberlinians. However, the town never wavered in their belief in a higher law than the Fugitive Slave Act. At the Welcome Home celebration for the imprisoned rescuers, the townspeople pledged “No fugitive slave shall ever be taken from Oberlin either with or without a warrant, if we have power to prevent it.” Eric Velasquez’ artwork is moving, but the photo of the men outside the Cuyahoga County Jail, April 1859 is the most powerful image in this homage to people who stood firm in their convictions. The choice to have this photo in the story rather than just in the notes section reminds the readers of the reality of the danger John was in and the risks the townspeople took. A powerful book about a particular historical episode with timeless implications regarding civil disobedience.
