Flannel Friday: Bee Bim Bop

September 9, 2011

Bee Bim Bop

Travel begets travel. On a recent trip, I had my first taste of bee bim bop while thinking of Linda Sue Park. My first trip to Korea is coming up in December. You can be sure I’ll be reading (and rereading) a lot of Linda Sue Park this fall and subjecting the kids to a Korean-themed storytime upon my return. To aid the smallish illustrations in Bee-bim Bop, I used milk filters to make larger versions of all the foods that go in bee bim bop.

Bee Bim Bop Ingredients

The ingredients used in Linda Sue Park’s version of bee bim bop: the central bowl of rice, garlic, green onions, spinach, carrots, meat, bean sprouts, hot peppers, and a fried egg.

Beebimbop Mixed

The (mostly unchopped) ingredients piled around the rice in the bowl with the fried egg and hot peppers on top. Dig in!

Finding Flannel Friday
This week’s Flannel Friday round up is hosted at Mel’s Desk. To find all past and future roundups, head on over to So Tomorrow.

Completely unrelated to flannel, if you’ve been to South Korea, I’d love any reading suggestions and travel tips.

Nice work. leaves to look up milk filters….

  2. Hi, I’m still looking for milk filters (can only seem to buy them online here in the UK – expensive), but wondering if coffee filters would work (cone shape rather than the frilly type)?

No, I don’t think coffee filters, but interfacing can work and it isn’t too expensive (and often on sale in the U.S. at least). It comes in a variety of thicknesses, probably something in the middle thickness would work best. Stiff enough to not flop about, but thin enough to cut easily (another reason I really like milk filters). Pellon is a brand I’ve heard works well in the U.S., but not sure if its available to you.

You will LOVE Korea! I was there 2.5 years ago to bring home my son – check my website and click on Seoul if you want to see what we did.
