From the summer reading theme, Dream Big Read, to the flurry of STEM initiatives, the moon and stars have had a good year. I jumped on the bandwagon last week with a Moon and Stars storytime for toddlers.
Opener: Glad to Meet You by Peter and Ellen Allard
Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
Action Rhyme: Bend and Stretch
Bend and stretch, reach for the stars
There goes Jupiter, here comes Mars
Bend and stretch and reach for the sky
Stand on tip-e-toe, oh! so high!
Star Shapes by Peter Malone
Song: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Twinkle twinkle little star by Sylvia Long

Flannelboard: Four Little Rockets
One shot off and then there were three!
Three little rockets with nothing to do.
One shot off, and then there were two!
Two little rockets afraid of the sun.
One little rocket alone is no fun.
Spaceship template available at my related Flannel Friday post.
Rhyme adapted from Four Little Stars at PreschoolEducation.com
(Don’t worry, I can count. There are more than four rockets in the photo because the kids played with “pin the spaceship on the planet” before and after storytime.)
I Took the Moon for a Walk by Carolyn Curtis and illustrated by Allison Jay
Action Song: Clap Your Hands by Wiggleworms
Craft: Inspired by Small Fox, we made moons. Very simple. Glue some noodles on a paper plate then cover with tinfoil, the noodle shapes give the moon craters.

I love this! I think the “pin the rocket” idea is a super one for before and after storytime–lets the kids play, but it’s a little directed so things don’t get too crazy. Will definitely be sharing this with our crew! And the moon craft is beautiful. Thank you!
Love the theme, flannel pieces and craft. Easy peasy, cute craft idea!! Thanks for sharing!!
Love the moon craft. Perfect for toddler storytime. Nice and easy and very cute!
