Summer Storytimes: Stories in the Park

on June 15, 2011

Every summer my library takes storytime out to two local parks for eight weeks. It’s so nice to be outdoors! There isn’t any grassy space right at our library so it is great to get out to places where storytime can merge into outdoor activities. After storytime proper we stay around for another half hour or so doing outdoor activities like parachutes, sidewalk chalk and bubbles. With this year’s One World Many Stories theme, each week’s storytime will focus on a different country or continent. Today I will be focusing on China and the post-storytime activity will be ribbon dancing to traditional Chinese music. If the wind keeps up the way it has all week, it will be fantastic for twirling ribbons. Depending on the turnout there may only be enough ribbons for the children to have one each, but I suspect they will be a little more chaotic than these dancers anyway so it will be okay.

Does your library do anything different for storytime in the summer?
